中国では２９日、麻薬密輸の罪で英国人シャイフ被告の死刑を執行したという。
ブラウン英首相は「英政府の嘆願が考慮されなかったことに驚きと失望を覚える。死刑囚の精神鑑定が行われなかったことを特に憂慮する I condemn the execution of Akmal Shaikh in the strongest terms, and am appalled and disappointed that our persistent requests for clemency have not been granted. I am particularly concerned that no mental health assessment was undertaken.」と述べ、刑執行を非難する声明を発表したという。
ミリバンド外相は「英国はどんな状況であっても死刑には反対する The UK is completely opposed to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances.」と強く抗議したという。
シャイフ被告の死刑は、ＥＵ市民が中国で死刑に処された最初のケースという。
現在、中国では４人の日本人が執行猶予なしの死刑判決を受けているという。
